Acrylic paint on canvas (30 inches x 40 inches)
It's not supposed to make sense, things rarely do. I originally started this piece to convey how scary and uncertain the world seems right now, but as I went on I just kept packing in symbolism and getting weird with it.
The man playing the saxophone on the dock exists only as a gesture, an idea. The monolith coming out of the mountains is a symbol for earth, and in the clouds above are a group of fish/missiles raining down. The boat and hand protruding from the water is merely a nod of aspiration to one of my favorite painters: Rembrandt. The Sea of Galilee is said to be where Jesus was resurrected and walked on water. Yet the hand (featuring the stigmata) is struggling to stay above the surface, with nobody coming to rescue him.
All this, and I still wanted to preserve a sense of childlike whimsy.
